I purchased this amp as an amp to use at home for practicing or jamming with friends who come and visit. I live in an apartment and my only other rigs are higher powered rigs that would get me in a lot of trouble if I played them loud.Tone:To me, this is what naturally suffers in the practice amp world. In honesty, I have been putting off a practice amp purchase for this reason. I originally was attracted to this amp because the price was right and there's a similar Joyo practice amp for bass guitar as well, and in my years of playing, i've learned that if you replace the speaker of a guitar practice amp with a bass speaker, I get a much smoother, less brittle sounding practice amp. I bought both with the intention of frankenstein-ing the two together to make a really nice practice amp.--so with that out of the way, when the amp arrived, I still wanted to test it out to see how it sounded anyways, just to confirm my bias. As it turned out, I was pleasantly surprised that this amp actually has a great response across the frequency spectrum. The speaker always seems like the bottleneck to me in tiny practice amps, and in this case, the speaker actually sounded a lot clearer with better bass response and no sharp, tinny highs like i was used to with practice amps. Honestly, the speaker alone makes this amp a completely worthwhile amp in my opinion. Outside of the speaker, you're also given a gain knob, tone knob and a drive button for tone. The gain knob can be pushed into slight drive, which is nice for a little grit, and you can use the volume knob to keep levels from getting out of control. The drive button is also a nice tube screamer-esque drive that sounds reasonable for a practice amp. The tone knob seems to be different than a standard high pass filter, as it seems to blend between a few different usable tones that would align with the knob setting; all the way back seems to have a bump in the low mids, leaves the bass as is, big cut on the mids and a slight treble reduction. All the way to the right seems to bump up the highs and high mids, the low mids are reduced and the bass is left alone. In the middle is just kind of a flat-ish eq response, so nothing is boosted or reduced. The gain and drive button work nicely with these, nothing getting too harsh or muffled. If you are a tone-tweaker, this probably won't be attractive to you. However, if you'd like to be able to plug-n-play, this is a great option. There isn't a setting that is overly extreme or harsh, or over the top, which some people also may not like, but those same people most likely have some pedals for tone already, so any extensive tone-sculpting will have to come from pedals.Size/portability:this is a small practice amp, and size is as expected. you can throw it in a bag and it won't take up much space. The amp is powered by either an AC plug or 6 AA size batteries. Honestly, I have no interest in running this off batteries, so i can't comment on battery life. It's made of a hard plastic which seems like it can take some accidental knocks.Other features:-headphone jack for silent practice-aux in for jamming along to mp3s or whatever you'd like. No Bluetooth that I'm aware of, but if that's a deal breaker for you, check out the joyo bantam amp series. they have a bluetooth in for wireless jamming. Those also function perfectly as practice amps as well, and also are a bit louder if you'd like a little more volume.BASS VERSION:Since I also bought the bass version of the amp, and I can't write a separate review for it, I'll add that the bass version is very similar to the guitar version. Great tone with a tone knob that is tailored for bass EQ curves. All very usable tones. The drive button is still there, and as a test, I plugged my bass into both the guitar and bass amp, and the drive on the guitar is a little heavier on the highs and mids, while the bass drive sounded more like an overdriven bass amp; a little warmer and not quite as high gain.Final thoughts:honestly, I think that this is a perfect no-frills practice amp. It's portable, lightweight, battery-powered and sounds great. I can't think of anything that it might be missing as far as features for a practice amp, although i could see future joyo practice amps including a line out with a cab ir function for recording, or going direct to the board if you're into that. That's also kind of an above and beyond thing for a practice amp though. If you want a small, portable, simple/easy-to-use plug-n-play amp, this amp is a great option. I'm very happy with it.I'd recommend for anyone looking for:-beginner's first amp-an amp to quickly get to for working out ideas-practice amp-portable amp to bring for low volume jamming with friends-portable amp to bring for away-from-home playing.I bought this so I could jam in the park with acoustic guitar players. It has just enough volume to work well. I have to use the gain on the clean channel to get it loud enough. I also need to really tweek the tone setting on my bass to get a good sound otherwise the speaker will crap out. The tone knob on mine must be faulty. I don't hear any difference no matter how I set it. I decided not to return it through considering how inexpensive it was. Otherwise I might have rated it 5 stars. The drive channel is kind of useless to me. It gives it a fuss bass sound. The aux in can sound really good with good quality mp3 player. It can have a really good low end. What I really like is the battery life. So far I've been playing it for about ten hours on a new set of Everready rechargeable batteries. This is a good product for the money. It's a nice light portable practice amp.Update: the tone control works. I tried my acoustic guitar. It just doesn't make any difference on my basses. Active or passive pickups don't make a difference. The acoustic guitar sounds great with this amp. It produces a very clear clean sound that can fill a decent size room.I needed a portable, battery operated bass amp to take to a hands on demonstration where kids got to interact with the instrument. The sound was sufficient to the task, and its durability, light weight, and reasonable price didn't hurt my overall impression of this little amp.Sounds okay for a small practice amp. I bought this to have something portable but when I received it wouldn't power on with the batteries. I left a review mentioning that and Joyo contacted me and sent me a new amp. This one works as expected and I was surprised by how good the customer service was.Took me a while to get batteries for it, but once I turned it on and dialed it to my liking, great sound for good classic rock jamming and picking. Affordable than a Blackstar if your on a budget. ?My first order of the amp had hardly any sound coming out (it would be a one star) so I'd had to get a replacement on the order. The replacement works just fine. It's not a loud or rich sounding amp due to its size but it works great for practicing.Good product. Not the kind of amp to play in an arena. It can only get so loud. But good for portability and a good practice amp. From reading some of the reviews, I would have thought that this thing made no sound at all. But I know musicians and for some, nothing but maximum wattage will do.For practicing around the house, or adding some volume to keep up with a few unamplified acoustic guitars, this little battery powered bass amp has more than enough volume. The clean tone is quite nice and you can crank up the gain and volume on clean to about 3 o'clock before it starts to break up. The distorted tone is pretty cheesy and useless, but I'm still giving 5 stars because I will never again touch that switch anyway. I was just curious....I had Blackstar Fly previously and it was basically good for self practice only. The Joyo is considerably louder that even the Fly Bass pack, particularly for an acoustic bass that has a preamp. I have not owned the Roland, but it's ridiculously expensive.I have not had the unit long enough to test battery life, but I can say that the volume with batteries appears to be the same as when using the 9v adapter. There's not much point in comparing this to a regular bass amp that has a bigger speaker, more volume and can be plugged in. But if you need something super portable that can run on its own, overall it's a battery-powered mini bass amp that actually works. There aren't many other choices out there and this one is a lot cheaper than the others.First off this is a practice amp only nobody is going to gig with this or jam with a drummer. That said it sounds great! I’ve really only played with the clean channel and the output is pretty low until the gain is up pretty high. I crank the gain all the way up and then set the volume where I want it. No appreciable break up in the clean channel with the gain dimed. The built in overdrive channel sounded decent.Recently tried reverb, overdrive, and tremolo pedals with the clean channel with good results, though the overdrive to my ears worked best with lower gain levels. The amp is light but lacks a handle, c’mon Joyo! For that reason I only give it 2 stars for portability.4 stars for versatility, great cleans, takes pedals well, built in drive channel sounds decent. Probably not loud enough to jam with a drummer.5 stars for sound quality. For a few bucks more than the tiny “F-brand” mini-amps this sounds so much bigger than it is and is truly fun to play. The product is well built. I expected something flimsy, but it is not. It actually looks good too.It is a practice amp, not an amp to gig with. It is a great little unit. Battery and wall powered. Clean and dirty channel. Headphone Jack and line in. For the price it’s a very good product. Don’t buy it and say it sucks for gigging. It’s a practise amp.I bought this amp for my son, who is a semi-professional bass player. I'm looking forward to jamming with him with this amp:"This little amp is perfect for practicing at home by myself. My immediate impression of the amp is how light it is but one thing to be cautious of - it does take batteries, but because of where the on/off switch is located, it may be accidentally switched on if you carry it around in the box it came in. So I would just remove a battery when doing that. The amp is certainly loud enough when I’m practicing by myself, although I can’t really say how well it serves as an amp to play with a band. At 10W, I imagine it is appropriate for playing along with acoustic guitars and percussion. The clean tone is very good and as a bass player, the overdrive is always a fun addition. The addition of the Aux In channel is perfect for easily playing music off my phone, and the Headphone Out is great for if I really need to be kind to my neighbours. My only minor gripe with the amp is that when I do use the Aux In to play along with music, it seems like the overall maximum loudness is diminished.Overall, I think this amp is a really great purchase for solo practicing. I can easily set it up to play when I want and it sounds really good for its size."Just arrived today and it's fantastic. I have a gig-ready amp system but this will get used a ton for living room rehearsing. Sound is great for its size and I have run multiple basses (active/passive/upright) through it and all sound more than good enough. A really great value.
